Equality statement

At The Ferncumbe Church of England Primary School, we are committed to meeting our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and to promoting equality, inclusion and respect for all members of our school community.

We recognise and value diversity and are committed to ensuring that no pupil, staff member, parent, carer or visitor is disadvantaged due to any of the protected characteristics defined by the Equality Act 2010:
age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation

In line with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), we have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation

  • Advance equality of opportunity between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

  • Foster good relations between different groups

Our Commitment

We strive to create an inclusive learning environment where all pupils feel safe, valued and enabled to achieve their full potential. We promote high expectations for all, recognising that diversity is a strength that enriches our school community.

Pupil outcomes and participation are monitored and reviewed to identify and address any potential inequalities. This includes analysing data and information to ensure that teaching, learning and support are inclusive and responsive to individual needs, particularly for pupils who may face barriers to learning, including those with disabilities or additional needs

We do not tolerate discrimination, bullying, harassment or victimisation in any form. All incidents are taken seriously and addressed promptly, in line with school policies and safeguarding procedures.

We achieve this by:

  • Treating all members of our school community as individuals, respecting their backgrounds, experiences, beliefs and needs

  • Making reasonable adjustments and removing barriers so that pupils with disabilities can access education on an equal basis with others

  • Promoting a positive school ethos that actively challenges stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination

  • Embedding equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the curriculum in age‑appropriate ways, in line with statutory guidance and our school’s Christian values

  • Encouraging mutual respect, understanding and positive relationships between all groups within the school community

  • Regularly reviewing our policies, practices and equality outcomes to ensure continuous improvement and compliance with statutory duties

Our approach to equality and inclusion ensures that inclusion is central to leadership, curriculum design, behaviour, personal development and pupil outcomes. We are committed to identifying and removing barriers to learning and participation so that all pupils can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
