Ferncumbe Friday

Friday 13th October 2023

A reminder that our Harvest Festival will take place at Holy Trinity Church next week, on Wednesday 18th October at 9.15 am. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer an open invitation to all parents due to numbers. However, as it is Reception’s first visit to Church, Hatton Class parents are welcome to come and watch their child’s debut performance - there will be standing room at the rear of the Church. Coffee and tea will be available following the service.

Children are requested to bring dried food/packets/tins to school on the 18th October, which will then be donated to Warwick and Leamington Foodbank. Here are some currently requested items:

Long Life Milk
Long Life Fruit Juice
Tinned Vegetables
Instant Mash
Instant Noodles
Pasta Sauce
Tinned Fruit
Tomato Ketchup/Brown Sauce
Shower Gel
Toilet Rolls
Deodorant
Washing Up Liquid

Many thanks in advance for your support.

Year 5 Maths ChallEnge

This week, four of our Year 5 children had the opportunity to visit Princethorpe College to take part in a maths challenge. This involved competing against forty eight other teams from a range of different schools across the county. They had to complete a number of challenges within a set time. The children did extremely well and represented Ferncumbe brilliantly. Well done Hugh, Barnaby, Apphia and Anwyn.

Lowsonford Class

This week in Science, we chose our own question to investigate, to see if there were size patterns in the human body. Do taller people have bigger feet? Does pinky size grow with height? Does upper body size increase in proportion to lower body size? LOTS of measuring, data collecting and sorting took place, requiring perseverance and careful observation. Well done everyone!

HaTTOn Class

Hatton Class have knocked our socks off in their PE lessons. Today we were able to use the large apparatus and we explored it confidently and safely. We practised our gymnastic shapes from last week as we climbed and travelled. We can make straight shapes, tuck shapes and star shapes.

Mrs Stephenson

Shrewley Class

As part of our topic of Ancient Egypt, this week Year 4 have been learning about hieroglyphics. We loved doing some codebreaking as we learnt about this fascinating ancient writing system! After learning about the importance of the Rosetta Stone, we wrote our own names on ‘cartouches’ similar to how the names of pharaohs and queens of Egypt would have been recorded. We will soon be beginning a papyrus art project where our skills writing/drawing hieroglyphics will come in very useful!

Miss Reid

Haseley Class

We have been super mathematicians in Year One this week. We have been using comparison symbols to compare numbers. We made our own symbols using pipe cleaners to help us. We can also compare numbers using the correct vocabulary, greater than, less than and equal to. Super work Year 1!

Miss Constable

hockey tournament

What excellent teamwork and hockey playing from Year 5 children. Eight children were invited to Warwick Prep to play against other local schools. They took part in several activities to develop their hockey skills and then played 6 matches. The children all played so well and won every game apart from one which they drew. They supported each other and had a great time. Well done!

Mrs Eaves

Rowington class

More wild adventures from the Forest. Last week, we tried our hand at whittling. Some of us got to try it and loved it! The rest of the class will be trying their skills before half term. We talked about using the knife safely, and how to sit properly before getting to have a go. Nice work, Year 3!

AGM - the Friends of ferncumbe

The Friends of Ferncumbe held their AGM on 10th October. It was lovely to welcome some new faces and to have the continued involvement of our existing volunteers. The Chair's Report and the Treasurer's Report will be coming soon to the Friends of Ferncumbe page of the school website soon.

We'd like to extend our thanks to the school community for their support during the 2022/23 academic year. Together we raised a total of £3,708 through a variety of events.  This meant we were able to

  • offer ongoing financial support for the school's Curriculum Enrichment programme

  • heavily subsidise the class Christmas trips, making these special events more affordable for all

  • purchase Christmas gifts for the children and make a contribution to the Year 6 leavers' gift

This year we have already committed to contribute towards Curriculum Enrichment, class Christmas trips and a science event in the Spring term. None of this would be possible without your involvement and generosity. Thank you.

Pizza Night

On Friday 15th September, we held our first event of the school year. The annual Family BBQ had a revamp this year with Dough and Brew providing a pizza van, which seemed to be welcomed by the many families attending. We also held a bake off competition. The staff were very impressed by the quality of entries; it was so hard to choose the winners! Well done to everyone and thanks for your donations. As a result of the bar, raffle and cake sales we were able to raise over £600; a fantastic start to our fundraising year! Thanks to all our volunteers who helped with the event.

Christmas Market - Save the Date!

This year we are excited to announce we will be holding a Friends of Ferncumbe Christmas market at The Falcon Inn, Hatton. The market will take place on Saturday 2nd December 10am - 12 noon. More details to follow but expect lots of festive fun.

WARWICKSHIRE FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE BONFIRE COMPETITION 2023

It’s that time of year again when we look forward to celebrating all the sights and sounds of a fun filled bonfire night. It is important that whilst having fun, safety advice is followed to raise awareness and reduce the risk of incidents.

We would like to invite children to take part in our bonfire competition and will be selecting winners and awarding prizes for entries in each year group.

We are hoping for some fantastic, original stories and poems which highlight how we use all our senses to enjoy the celebrations, but also the important things to remember to keep us safe whilst having fun.

Closing date: Friday 27th October

Entries must include name and age of child on the back of the short story or poem. Please post/email entries to:
