Ferncumbe Friday

Friday 8th March 2024

Science Week 2024

This year’s Science Week was packed with activity. We began the week with an assembly on atoms and molecules, after which the pupils were invited to find the 10 hidden molecules around school. A Science fair around school on Monday, saw classes visiting each other and listening to each other’s presentations and the quantity of projects and the effort that went into them, blew the teachers away. Ana Neto Monteiro, a JLR engineer also visited Year 5 on Tuesday to make circuits using play dough!

Every class carried out a biscuit dunking investigation, showing fascinating progression and development of ideas through the year groups. Hands On Science spent Wednesday with us and carried out a workshop with every year group, from rockets and animal footprints, to the water cycle, elastic racers and candle making. The near impossible task of choosing 7 winners and 7 runners up lead us to our final gathering on Friday, to celebrate our achievments and award certificates. Our Year 6 winner gave a most excellent demonsatration of her digestive system project.

Well done to all the children and thank you to all the teachers for their hard work. Hopefully Science Week 2026 will be just as good!

worship

The value we are thinking about in all areas of school life this half-term is ‘Justice’. Whole school and class worship will be centred around this theme. Do ask your child(ren) about the discussions they have been having in class.

Rowington Class

Year 3 have been perfecting their measuring skills since half term. For our last lesson of the unit, we put our skills to the test. We measured the height of our friends, the size of their foot and how far they could jump to see if there was a link between the measurements. We are going to be unpicking this in science this week, so look out for the answers!

Shrewley Class

Last Friday, Year 4 had a super day at Lunt Fort learning about the Romans. We learnt about many aspects of Roman life, handled lots of interesting objects and learnt how to fight like Roman soldiers. Our leaders for the day were impressed with our knowledge and skills!

world book day - thursday 7th march 2024

To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7th March, children are encouraged to bring in a favourite book to share with their class (this can be a book from home or one chosen from school). During the day, classes will take part in activities such as scavenger hunts, buddy reading sessions and the sharing of their favourite stories.

Over the past year, due to your generosity in supporting the book fair and purchases through our Amazon wish list, we have greatly increased our range of high-quality books in school. Both teachers and pupils have been delighted with the wonderful new books and they have contributed to an increase in reading for pleasure across school.

In celebration of World Book Day, we invite you to contribute to our library by purchasing a book from our Amazon Gift List.

We are always very grateful for donations of quality pre-loved books too!

Your child will bring home their World Book Day token in the coming week. This can either be used to redeem a book from the selection below for free or as £1 discount on a book of their choice.

Many thanks for your support,

Miss Reid

With best wishes for a lovely weekend,
