Ferncumbe Friday

Friday 13th May 2022

break the rules day!

There was great excitement in school today with children being invited to come in and break the rules! Thank you to the Friends of Ferncumbe for organising this fun, fundraising activity. It’s a new event, but after how enthusiastically it was received today I feel it’s definitely going to become a Ferncumbe keep!

CONGRATULATIONS LOWSONFORD class

Year 6 children in Lowsonford Class completed their Key Stage 2 SATs yesterday. Throughout the week they faced the series of assessments with maturity, focus, application and determination; we were so proud of them all and know that each of them gave their very best. Congratulations Year 6!

Many thanks to Mrs White who organised special, surprise treats yesterday afternoon, and also to every member of staff in school who supported the children by keeping morale high and stress levels low!

Chicken news

Our lovely friends have been given some new freedom. Now that the fence between the coop and the playground has been patched up and the weather has been better, the chickens have been allowed to venture outside their coop for the first time since we got them. They are being doted on by teams of dedicated children and are really showing us their funny and lovable characters! Don’t they look like they’re having a blast?

platinum jubilee celebrations

In addition to the Jubilee themed Summer BBQ on Friday 20th May (details below) we are going to be celebrating in school on Friday 27th May. Children are invited to come to school in red, white and blue for the occasion. We will be having a whole school picnic on the field at lunchtime and a variety of themed activities will take place throughout the day.

The school office will be in touch about how you are able to order a Jubilee themed deli-bag for your child from the school kitchen on that day, if your child doesn’t normally have a school meal and would like one.

Fruity Friday!

This half term, Year 1 are working towards making a fruit salad. Last week, we had a tasting session and tried lots of new fruits. We tried things like kiwi and mango and melon. Miss Forbes was so proud that we all tried absolutely all the different fruits, even if we knew already that we didn’t like them. Keep your eye out on Twitter for our finished fruit salads nearer to half term!

Gymnastics competition

A massive well done to the ten Year 1 and 2 children who represented Ferncumbe in the Key Steps Virtual Gymnastic competition this week. We are all so proud of the effort they put in to learn and perform the routine. Their resilience has been overwhelming. Results of the competition should be out in the next couple of weeks but in the meantime, please copy and paste this link into your browser to watch the video entries.

I think you will all agree that they are amazing!

Wroxall's Beowulf Freezeframes

Wroxall class have really enjoyed reading Beowulf this half term. They have loved hearing about the monster's gruesome end at the hands of brave Beowulf. They did a brilliant job of summarising the story by creating some amazing freezeframes. In a group, they decided on the most important events of the story and then created a freezeframe for each one. They worked so well together in groups and created some really thoughtful ideas for each event. The class were able to identify the parts of the story, showing a great understanding. Excellent work.

Hatton Class

2 weeks ago, Hatton Class planted bean plants... look how much they have grown! They have done a super job learning how to take great care of their plants. They are observing how their plants change each week and recording it in a special diary. Well done Hatton scientists!

Lowsonford’s Science

This week, Lowsonford took a break from their exams to begin the Electricity topic. This always involves the bi-annual check of all the equipment, requiring the building and testing of many, many circuits! I'm already bowled over by their practical skills and motivation to problem solve. Buzzers buzzed, bulbs shone and motors span. Well done!

Honiley habitats

In science this term, Year 2 have been learning about living things and their habitats. We went to our school garden to explore the different habitats we have in school. We had so much fun! We were amazed to find that a bird is nesting in school! We even saw lots of wiggly worms in our wormery!

With very best wishes for a lovely weekend,
